Career Profile: Population Studies

The world's population exceeded 6.1 billion individuals in 2001, and is growing at about 1.3 percent annually. Over sixty percent of the world's population lives in Asia, 13 percent live in Africa and 12 percent live in Europe; the remaining 14 percent live in the Americas and Oceania. According to medium projections of the United Nations, the world's population will rise to 9.3 billion by 2050. Total fertility rates have fallen from 4.9 births per woman between 1965 and 1970 to 2.7 between 2000 and 2005. The world is aging at unprecedented rates due to decreases in both birth and death rates. In 2000 the median age was 26.5, and it is expected to climb to 36.2 by 2050.
