Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., is recognized internationally as a leader in entrepreneurial management education. Babson grants undergraduate business degrees as well as MBA and custom MS and MBA degrees through the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business.

This past March, Babson College and four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs)-Clark Atlanta University (Atlanta, GA), Spelman College (Atlanta, GA), North Carolina A&T (Greensboro, NC), and Southern University, (Baton Rouge, LA)-formed a partnership to support several key entrepreneurial initiatives including the creation of innovative curricular materials focusing on African-American entrepreneurs. The effort is supported by a $40,000 matching grant by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

The 2002 Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics conducted by researchers from Babson College and the Kauffman Foundation reports that African Americans are fifty percent more likely to start a business than their Caucasian counterparts. New business formation among people of color is more widespread than previously disclosed.

The study also found that African-American men with graduate degrees are 2.6 times more likely to start businesses than their white counterparts. "This high level of entrepreneurial activity, combined with the dearth of business cases written about African-American entrepreneurs, underscores the tremendous need for the Babson/HBCU consortium." says Stephen Spinelli, director of the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship at Babson College. Spinelli is also a co-founder of Jiffy Lube.
